Research Findings Addressing Tobacco in Managed Care (ATMC) funded two types of grants: planning grants and evaluation grants. Planning grants laid the groundwork for the development of a strong evaluation proposal and could be used to fund pilot or demonstration projects that yield evidence of: (1) systems change impact (e.g., an increase in smoker identification); (2) clinician adherence to systems changes; or (3) an effective working relationship between managed care organizations and researchers. Evaluation grants assessed the impact of systems changes on such outcomes as rates of smoker identification, rates of clinician intervention, staff acceptance, rates of quit attempts in the managed care population, costs of the intervention efforts, and smoking cessation outcomes.
